Process
A typical treatment session consists of three phases:
First, we sit and talk to understand why the client is coming and what is happening in the broader context of their life. As treatments progress, this phase of the work might also include verbal meditation work to support the healing process. This is our art of Intuitive Healing.
Second, the patient lies down and we move energy through their entire body, including the organs in the abdomen, using hand-based work. During this phase, we are also diagnosing where we need to do deeper work.
Third, we do a heat-based treatment, working with the moghusa to apply heat to the areas of the body which are critical for the specific patient. The technique we use is called Ninniku Okyū, or garlic moxibustion, and it involves protecting the skin with slices of garlic and then burning the moghusa on top of the garlic in order to move heat into the body.
Talking and getting to know each other and why the client has come is a critical component of the work.
Next, we move energy through the client’s entire body, including their abdomen using fairly vigorous hand-based work. During this work, we are also offering energy to the client through our hands as well as diagnosing where we need to do deeper work.
While the hand-based work is happening, the assistant is preparing the garlic for the Ninniku Okyū work. The garlic must be cut into slices of a consistent thickness. The slices are then blotted to remove any excess liquid that might irritate the skin.
Based on the information gathered in the hand-based work and intuitive guidance, the garlic slices are placed on the critical points in the body.
The moghusa herb is placed on top of the garlic slices over the exact points where energy is stuck in the body. This technique allows for extremely precise location of the heat therapy.
After the moghusa is placed on the garlic, it is lit with flint of an incense stick.
The moghusa slowly burns, gradually heating the garlic. The garlic protects the skin and softens the sensation of the heat, which helps the client relax and let the heat soak deeply into their body.
After a minute or so the moghusa has burned completely.
The burned moghusa is then removed and another round of fresh moghusa is placed on the garlic and the process is repeated. This continues until the client feels the specific point getting quite hot, but before the heat burns the skin. We watch the skin to prevent burning and also ask the client to let us know when it is getting hot. After each point gets hot, the garlic is removed and we gently massage the heat into the body. This is repeated on all critical areas of the body. After the treatment the patient then holds the heat in their body for a specified amount of time. See After Your Treatment
In the days following the treatment, we contact the client to see how they are doing. We encourage all clients to check in with us to ask any questions or share any insights.
